Physical Characteristics

Breed Group:

Working group.

Weight:

Between 75 to 110 pounds (35 to 50 kilograms).

Height:

Between 61 to 71 cm at the shoulder (24 to 28 inches).

Color(s):

Akitas come in four different colorings — Sesame, Red Fawn, Brindle, and White.

Coat:

Akitas have a thick double coat which lies close to their body. The straight, coarse hairs are of short or medium length.

Overview

Character:

Akitas are strong-willed and dominant dogs. They’re very independent and protective of their family members and property.

Country of Origin:

Japan.

History:

Akitas originated on the island of Honshu in northern Japan during the 1600s. These were the dogs of the noble class and they were highly coveted. Akitas did not become popular in the rest of the world until after the second world war.

Name:

Akitas get their name from the Akita Prefecture in northern Japan, which is believed to be their place of origin.

Temperament:

Akitas tend to be dominant and independent dogs. They have a natural defensive instinct and can be unreliable around children and other animals unless raised with them.

Care

Training:

Akitas require early obedience training and are not ideal for owners who do not have experience with handling this breed. These dogs perform best with educated, kind trainers who can provide firm leadership. Properly trained Akitas make great companions and watchdogs.

Activity:

These dogs have a relatively low activity level.

Ownership:

Akitas become very loyal and devoted to their family members. They can be very easy-going and relaxed dogs, but because of their dominant and protective natures they are not ideal for households with children or other animals.
