Overview

Character:

Alentejo Mastiffs are powerful and courageous. These dogs mature slowly and tend to be aggressive with strangers and predators. However, with their owners, Alentejo Mastiffs are very loyal and affectionate companions.

History:

The Alentejo Mastiff is a close relative of the Anatolian Mastiff and is believed to have descended from the Tibetan Mastiff. Developed in the Alentejo region of southern Portugal, the Alentejo Mastiff was long used to protect and herd flocks in the mountains. This breed has been officially recognized by the Continental Kennel Club and, while there are not yet many registered breeders, the breed’s population is growing.

Additional names for this breed include Rafeiro do Alentejo, Portuguese Watchdog, and Portuguese Mastiff.

Temperament:

Alentejo Mastiffs are hard-working and independent dogs. Although protective and highly territorial, Alentejo Mastiffs get along relatively well with children.

Care

Training:

These independent dogs have a tendency to be aggressive and require firm training from an experienced handler.

Activity:

Alentejo Mastiffs are active dogs with a high exercise requirement.

Ownership:

Alentejo Mastiffs are not suitable for urban living as they require plenty of space and exercise. This breed is also not suitable for beginner dog owners. When properly trained, Alentejo Mastiffs are good with children and make excellent companions. These dogs require weekly grooming to maintain the health and appearance of their coats.
