Height:

27-32 inches (69-81 cm) at the shoulders.

Color(s):

Some common colors include white, fawn, or striped brindle with a black mask and black ears.

Coat:

These dogs have a short, dense coat with a thick undercoat. Sometimes the coat will include feathering around the ears, legs, and tail.

Overview

Character:

Anatolian Shepherd dogs are intelligent but highly independent. With proper socialization, these dogs make friendly and protective companions. Easily bored, Anatolian Shepherds require plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

Country of Origin:

Turkey.

History:

These dogs originated in Turkey around 1000 B.C. They were used by ancient shepherds to protect their flocks and are still used in the same way by present-day Turkish shepherds. In the USA, these dogs are used on farms and ranches to protect livestock and flocks from coyotes and other predators.

Anatolian Shepherd Dog, Karabash, Coban Köpegi, Kara bas, Kangal Dog.

Temperament:

These versatile dogs are highly protective and possessive of their family, property, and other animals in their household. They are very intelligent but also have a mind of their own. When not guarding, Anatolian Shepherd Dogs are easy-going, reliable, and devoted to their owners.

Care

Training:

Due to their forceful, independent, and possessive nature, these dogs require determined socialization and obedience training from an experienced handler.

Activity:

This breed has a high activity level and requires daily exercise and mental stimulation.

Ownership:

These dogs are not ideal for first-time or shy owners. Anatolian Shepherd Dogs require firm, experienced handlers. However, when properly trained and socialized, these dogs are very loving and devoted to their families. Due to their protective nature, Anatolian Shepherd Dogs make great watchdogs.
