Standard colourings include mahogany merle, blue merle, red merle, solid red, solid black, and solid mahogany.

The Basque Shepherd’s coat is either straight or slightly wavy and of medium length.

Overview

Character:

Basque Shepherd Dogs are intelligent animals that learn fast. While these dogs are excellent workers with strong instincts, they are also very loyal companions.

Country of Origin:

Spain.

History:

So far unrecognized as an official breed with any of the major kennel clubs, the Basque Shepherd Dog originated in the Basque region of Spain. It is believed that this breed has been depicted in prehistoric cave paintings and paintings and drawings from the middle ages also show these dogs working as shepherds and herders. These days, Basque Shepherd Dogs are still working in certain regions of Spain, but are otherwise quite rare.

Name:

Additional names for this breed include Basque Sheepdog, Pastor Vasco, Euskal Artzain Txakurra, Perro de Vasco, Euskara Herder, and Chien de berger basque.

Temperament:

Basque Shepherd Dogs are reserved around strangers but relaxed with family members. These dogs have a take charge attitude while working but are not vicious or aggressive with humans, dogs, or other animals.

Care

Training:

Sensitive and intelligent, these dogs learn quickly and are easy to train.

Activity:

Basque Shepherd Dogs have a moderate activity level and require daily exercise.

Ownership:

With their balanced personalities and strong loyalty, Basque Shepherd Dogs are excellent companions for families, including those with children and other pets. These dogs can live in the country or in town, as long as they have access to a yard and receive sufficient exercise each day. Basque Shepherd Dogs have an average life expectancy of 10 to 15 years and require regular grooming.
