Chinese Crested comes in numerous colors, and can be a solid color as well as spotted. The hairless type can have colored spots on their skins.

Coat:

There are two types of Chinese Crested Dogs, the “powderpuff” and the “hairless,” which can appear within the same litter. The powderpuff type has soft, thick double-coat that resembles a terrier, and the “hairless” type has tufts of fur on the paws, tail, and head (“crest”).

Overview

Character:

A happy and easy-going breed, the Chinese Crested makes an excellent family pet. They are quick to become friendly with anyone, and are great lap dogs. The soft skins of the hairless type can be prone to injury during rough play, so young children should be taught to be gentle with them.

History:

This breed became associated with China when European visitors saw them in Chinese port cities and onboard Chinese merchant ships. They were possibly picked up by these ships from their native Africa to be used as ratters.

Name:

The name of this breed reflects its remarkable physical appearance. It was also called Chinese Hairless Dog, Chinese Royal Dog, and Chinese Ship Dog.

Temperament:

A well-socialized Chinese Crested should be alert, playful, and affectionate. They are generally very adaptable. They are energetic like most toy breeds, but they do not have the tendency to bark. The often become very attached to their owners, and are therefore great companion dogs. They do best when they have constant companionship, therefore they should not be left alone for long periods of time.

Care

Training:

This breed is intelligent and adaptable, and has the ability to learn many tricks. Early training and socialization can ensure that they display their friendly, outgoing nature. They are generally good with other pets, although grown males can be a little aggressive.

Activity:

Chinese Crested only requires a small amount of exercise, and would thrive with just regular play sessions. They do enjoy brisk, short walks. Their size and activity requirement make them well-suited for living in city apartments.

Ownership:

This breed is generally very low-maintenance; very little grooming is required for the hairless type, and the powderpuff type only requires daily brushing. The hairless skins may be prone to sunburn or acne, so basic skin care such as the application of sunscreen is needed. Both types shed very little, so they are also considered a good breed for allergy sufferers.
