History:

This breed originated in the Netherlands in the sixteenth century. Used as a symbol of the revolution by Dutch rebels, this breed became famous. Sometimes used as guard dogs on barges, the Keeshond was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1949.

Name:

The plural of Keeshond is Keeshonden. These dogs were named for Cornelis “Kees” de Gyselaer, the leader of a Dutch rebel group during the late 1700s. This breed is also known as the Dutch Barge Dog, Deutscher Wolfsspitz, Wolf Spitz, and Chien Loup.

Temperament:

Keeshonden are intelligent dogs but can be quite stubborn. At the same time, they are typically quite eager to please. These dogs are good with children and generally get along well with other dogs.

Care

While stubborn, Keeshonden are intelligent and eager to please so they tend to be quite trainable. This breed can excel at obedience and agility trials.

Activity:

Keeshonden are relatively active and require regular exercise. These dogs tend to be happiest if they have a yard to protect.

Ownership:

Keeshonden make excellent family companions and are great with children. These dogs require early training to prevent excessive barking from becoming a problem and also require frequent grooming. Keeshonden are great watchdogs and are also very loving and affectionate.
