Overview

Character:

Lhasas can be dignified as well as funny and mischievous. These dogs seem to exhibit human-like emotions more than other breeds and their personalities can differ quite greatly from one Lhasa Apso to another. Lhasas are very loyal toward their family members.

Country of Origin:

Tibet.

History:

This breed originated in Tibet around the seventh century. Used as watchdogs for the Dalai Lama’s palace, Lhasa Apsos did not appear in the West until the 1920s. This breed was registered with the American Kennel Club in 1935.

Name:

This breed was named for the holy city of Lhasa in Tibet. Additional names include Lhassa Terrier and Bark Lion Sentinel Dog.

Temperament:

Lhasa Apsos have a very independent nature and can be quite stubborn. These dogs are also wary and suspicious of strangers and make excellent watchdogs. Lhasas are intelligent and can sometimes be manipulative.

Care

Training:

Lhasas require firm and consistent training and respond best to a reward system and positive reinforcement techniques. Since these dogs become bored easily, it’s best to keep training sessions fun and short.

Activity:

Lhasa Apsos don’t have a high activity level and do quite well living indoors. However, it’s still always a good idea for Lhasas to receive regular walks.

Ownership:

Lhasa Apsos are guard dogs more than they are companion animals. They are also not very suitable for households with children. However, these dogs can be very faithful to their family members and are excellent watchdogs. Lhasas do well indoors and don’t mind being left alone while their families go to work.
