Character:

Norwegian Lundehunds are active and energetic dogs with incredible flexibility and agility. With happy and upbeat personalities, these dogs are merry and affectionate companions.

Norway.

History:

This breed hails from the Lofoten Islands, which are located off Norway’s northern coast. Originally, Norwegian Lundehunds were predominately use for hunting puffins and guarding livestock. When these activities became far less common, the breed nearly became extinct. However, Norwegian Lundehunds were successfully revived during the 1960’s and are now popular canine companions.

Name:

Alternate names for this breed include Norsk Lundehund, Lundehund, and Norwegian Puffin Dog.

Temperament:

Although independent, these dogs are not aggressive animals. Alert and lively, Norwegian Lundehunds have cheerful dispositions.

Care

Training:

Due to their characteristic independent streak, Norwegian Lundehunds require firm training at a young age.

Activity:

Norwegian Lundehunds are active dogs that require plenty of space and exercise. This breed should never be confined inside.

Ownership:

Norwegian Lundehunds are popular as both hunting dogs and as pets. Potential owners should keep in mind that these dogs require considerable space to run and vigorous daily exercise. Unfortunately, this breed is genetically predisposed to developing a set of digestive disorders known as Lundehund Gastroenteropathy. While this illness cannot be cured, it can be managed. To maintain the health and appearance of their coats, Norwegian Lundehunds require regular brushing.
