Overview

Character:

The independent Saluki gives an impression of grace. Seen as dignified and gentle, this breed is loyal to the family. Some dogs are shy.

Middle East: Turkestan to Turkey

History:

The Saluki was regarded as Egypt’s royal dog. The Upper Nile region is the final resting place of many mummified dogs. This breed accompanied Arab nomads and brought down gazelles, foxes and hares. With a wide distribution from the Caspian Sea to the Sahara, the Salukis show great variation. In England this breed proved a great sight hunter for chasing hares.

Name:

Named after an Arabian city that has vanished. Arabian Hound, Gazelle Hound, Persian Greyhound, Persian Sighthound, Tazi, Tanji.

Temperament:

This affectionate breed is extremely sensitive. This friendly dog may be attached to one person in the family. Historically, the Saluki’s instinct is to chase and bring down non-canine animals. Be aware this dog is easily distracted and may not be obedient.

Care:

Training:

Provide training with love and consistency. Avoid harsh corrections and discipline. Do not expect the Saluki to be perfectly obedient.

Activity:

Exercise daily in a safe, enclosed area. This breed loves to run at high speed in great circles. Walking or trotting along a bike are great activities. Do not run with the dog who will easily out-run you. Activities can include lure coursing and open-field coursing. This breed enjoys chasing small animals and moving objects. Avoid rough play.

Ownership:

Owners need to provide a home with acreage. This indoor dog needs access to a yard. The Saluki should have a soft bed inside the home. Avoid keeping the dog out in the cold for an extended time. Keep on a leash unless in an enclosed area. This dog will chase and not come back when called. This breed is good with older, considerate children. Do no keep pets like birds, rabbits and rodents. Another Saluki would be its great companion.
