Overview

Character:

Slovakian Chuvachs are courageous and intelligent dogs with an incredible ability to retain what they have learned. As loyal companions, these dogs are known for being extremely affectionate with their family members.

Country of Origin:

Slovak Republic.

History:

This breed originated in the Carpathian mountains of the Slovak Republic and has existed since at least the seventeenth century. Although this flock guardian breed nearly became extinct after wolves disappeared from the mountainous regions of Europe, Dr. Antonin Hruza successfully revived the breed after World War II. The first standard was written by Dr. V. Kurz for this breed in 1964 and the Slovakian Chuvach gained official recognition for the first time in 1969. The Slovakian Chuvach, which is similar to the Kuvasz, is still quite rare but enjoys a certain level of popularity in Central Europe.

Name:

Chuvach, Kuvac or Cuvac is pronounced “chew-votch.” Additional names for this breed include Slovensky Cuvac, Slovakian Chuvach, Tatransky Cuvac, Slovensky Kuvacatransky Cuvac, and Slovensky Tchouvatch.

Temperament:

Slovakian Chuvachs are calm yet alert dogs. Suspicious of strangers, these animals are natural guardians. Although Slovakian Chuvachs can be stubborn, proper training can overcome this trait and obedient behaviour can be instilled. These gentle dogs are excellent with family members and children.

Care

Training:

Slovakian Chuvachs require firm training due to their stubborness. These dogs also require a dominant handler with a good understanding of flock guardians and their natural instincts.

Activity:

This active breed needs space and vigorous exercise.

Ownership:

This breed is not suitable for average pet owners. Slovakian Chuvachs are also not suitable for apartment living and should preferably live on a ranch or farm. This breed has an average life expectancy of 11 to 14 years and requires frequent brushing mostly at springtime and autum. Slovakian Chuvachs enjoy living with large families with children and livestock to look after.
