While this breed does come in white and brindle, for showing purposes solid colours of beige, black, blue or reddish fawn are preferred.

Coat:

The Thai Ridgeback has a short and straight coat of smooth hair. This breed also has a ridge of hair that runs in the opposite direction to the rest of its coat.

Overview

Character:

Thai Ridgebacks are intelligent dogs and are excellent for guarding and hunting. When properly raised, these dogs can also be good companions. Active, alert and tough, Thai Ridgebacks are great jumpers.

Country of Origin:

Thailand.

History:

While the exact origins of the Thai Ridgeback are unknown and several hypotheses regarding its history have been put forward, it is known that this breed originated in eastern Thailand. In existence since the middle ages, Thai Ridgebacks were used by farmers to protect and guard land and livestock. Although unknown beyond Thailand in the past, this breed is starting to gain recognition in other countries; however, it still remains quite rare outside of its homeland.

Name:

The Thai Ridgeback is also known as the TRD or Mah Thai Lang Ahn.

Temperament:

Thai Ridgebacks are relatively undomesticated dogs with natural protective instincts. These dogs are wary of strangers and, when not properly trained, they can be aggressive toward people and other dogs. Due to their temperament, Thai Ridgebacks require a dominant owner.

Care

Training:

Thai Ridgebacks can be difficult to train and require an experienced handler who understands the breed.

Activity:

This active breed requires long walks and other forms of exercise every day.

Ownership:

Thai Ridgebacks are not suitable for novice dog owners and require dominant, experienced handlers who have a good understanding of this particular breed. These dogs require proper training and socialisation from a young age in order to prevent aggression and uncontrollable behaviour. Thai Ridgebacks require plenty of exercise and prefer to live in warm climates, as they don’t like cold weather. This breed has an average life expectancy of 12 to 13 years and only requires occasional grooming to maintain coat health.
