Breed Group:

Hound group.

Weight:

Between 65 to 75 pounds (29 to 34 kilograms).

Height:

Between 21 to 25 inches at the shoulder (53 to 64 cm).

Color(s):

This breed comes in a variety of colors and color combinations, including black, white, tan, cream, and red. Tricolors are common.

Coat:

An American Foxhound’s coat is short and harsh and lies close to the body.

Overview

Character:

American Foxhounds have a sweet nature but tend to prefer the company of other dogs of their breed rather than humans. They are very active and like to roam when they get the chance.

Country of Origin:

United States (southeastern region).

History:

This breed of dog can be traced back to the hounds owned by Robert Brooke during the 1650’s. Brooke brought English hounds to America where he bred them with French and Irish hounds to create the American Foxhound.

Name:

Named for the fact that this breed of foxhound was bred in the southeastern United States.

Temperament:

While sweet and gentle, these dogs prefer their own kind to humans. They get bored easily and can become destructive if bored or confined. These dogs are highly intelligent and have a strong hunting instinct.

Care

Training:

American Foxhounds require careful training and socialization. They are highly intelligent animals, bred for hunting.

Activity:

American Foxhounds are extremely active and require plenty of space and exercise.

Ownership:

While they are not overly people-oriented animals, American Foxhounds can make loyal family dogs. They have a sweet nature and get along well with children. Owners need to be able to provide these dogs with plenty of exercise.
