Color(s):

Basenjis come in many different colors. Standard colors allowed by the American Kennel Club include black, black and tan, red, chestnut, and brindle. With all these colorings, the dogs will have white chests, feet, and tail tips. White blazes and collars are also common.

Coat:

Basenjis have a short, silky coat that requires minimal maintenance.

Basenjis are very intelligent and inquisitive dogs. They are proud, alert, and playful. They also tend to dislike water.

Country of Origin:

Central Africa.

History:

It is thought that the Basenji originated in Africa around 4000 B.C. Depictions of these dogs have been found on ancient Egyptian tombs and there is evidence that Basenjis were present at an early date in the Central African rain forest region that now comprises Sudan and Zaire. The first Basenjis arrived in England in 1895 and this breed was registered with the American Kennel Club in 1943.

Temperament:

Basenjis are proud, independent, and intelligent dogs with a good sense of humor. These dogs do not bark; however, they are still vocal and make a range of different sounds. Basenjis like to run and play and can become destructive when bored. Due to their independent nature, these dogs are not always the most obedient animals.

Care

Training:

Basenjis are very intelligent animals and learn quickly. However, they’re also independent and have a mind of their own. Basenjis require proper training and supervision to prevent them from becoming destructive.

Activity:

Basenjis are very active dogs that require plenty of exercise to prevent them from becoming bored. They’re fast runners and great climbers, and have been known to climb fences as high as eight feet.

Ownership:

Basenjis tend to be one-family dogs. These dogs groom themselves like cats, so their coats require little maintenance. However, this breed is prone to skin allergies and skin diseases. Basenjis are playful dogs and have a good sense of humor.
