Overview

Character:

Entlebuch Mountain Dogs are intelligent and social animals that like to spend time with their family. These dogs love to play and roughhouse and are very friendly and devoted companions.

Country of Origin:

Switzerland.

History:

A close relative of the Appenzeller, the Entlebuch Mountain Dog has ancient roots that likely stretch back to Roman times. Developed in the Entlebuch region of Lucerne, this breed was used to protect and herd cattle and was highly popular in its native country in the past. While the Entlebuch Mountain Dog nearly went extinct at one point, the breed was revived during the early twentieth century and has been gaining in popularity ever since.

Name:

This breed was named for its region of origin, the Entlebuch area of Lucerne, Switzerland. Additional names for this breed include Entlebucher Sennenhund, Entelbucher Mountain Dog, and Entelbucher Cattle Dog.

Temperament:

While this breed is very even-tempered, it also tends to be territorial and wary of strangers, both of which are good watchdog characteristics. Entlebuch Mountain Dogs are also self-confident and independent dogs, but at the same time they are very people-oriented and like to be with their owners as much as possible.

Care

Training:
As intelligent, strong-willed animals, Entlebuch Mountain Dogs require early training and socialisation. That said, these dogs are quite easy to train.

Activity:

These dogs are very active and require regular exercise as well as plenty of room to run and play.

Ownership:

Potential owners should keep in mind that Entlebuch Mountain Dogs have a high exercise requirement and also need lots of room for running and playing. These willful dogs also require plenty of early training and socialisation and, therefore, may not be the best match for busy owners. When properly trained, these dogs can be great with children and may even herd them up like cattle. Entlebuch Mountain Dogs are very friendly, companionable dogs that require regular grooming.
