History:

In ancient times, this breed may have forerunners in the Barbichon family. In the 17th-century, Europeans brought Bichon Lapdogs to Cuba, where traders gave these dogs as gifts to Cuban women to help trade relations. The Blanquito de la Habana later developed. The wealthy elite owned these lapdogs. Some of these Habeneros came to Europe and were known as the “White Cuban.” Cross-breeding with French and German poodles helped develop the Bichon Havanese. Although their numbers declined, three families from Cuba brought their dogs to the USA where they helped restore the breed. The Havanese is the National Dog of Cuba.

Temperament:

These energetic and playful dogs show affection to family and strangers alike. With their clownish behavior, they love being the center of attention. The sociable Havanese is responsive and sensitive to your tone of voice.

Care

Training:

This responsive dog easily takes to obedience training. While they are young, you need to teach them not to bark unnecessarily. They can also be trained for the show ring or as a companion dog.

Activity:

The Havenese loves swimming and diving. This agile dog enjoys short walks and playtime. As an indoor dog, they like to spy from the tops of sofas. Their vocal qualities make them suitable as watchdogs.

Ownership:

Owners need to provide plenty of exercise for this athletic dog. The Havanese needs to live indoors where it can maintain a very active life. This companion dog can suit all ages, from children to the elderly. As a watchdog, this breed barks when visitors arrive, then welcomes once the owner greets the guest.
