Hokkaidos are very courageous dogs that have an amazing sense of direction. With family members, these dogs are very affectionate and docile.

History:

This ancient breed is one of Japan’s oldest dog breeds and its history stretches as far back as 1000 BC. The Hokkaido dog hails from the mountains of Hokkaido Island and most likely descended from dogs transported to this region by the Ainu people during ancient times. As a very hardy breed, the Hokkaido was used for hunting large game and has also proved itself as a sled dog. In 1939, this breed was designated as a natural monument of Japan.

Name:

This breed was named for its place of origin on Japan’s Hokkaido Island. Additional names for this breed include Ainu Dog, Ainu-ken, Seta, and Shita.

Temperament:

Hokkaidos are very alert and self-confident dogs. They get along well with children when raised with them and can make excellent companions.

Hokkaido dogs require firm training techniques.

Activity:

Indoors, Hokkaido dogs have a moderate activity level. They require outdoor access and daily exercise.

Ownership:

This breed is not suitable for apartment living and requires plenty of outdoor space and regular exercise. While Hokkaido dogs should not be allowed to run free around other animals, they can get along well with children when raised with them. These faithful and brave dogs are an ideal combination of excellent hunter and companion. Hokkaidos typically live approximately fifteen years and require regular brushing.
