The coat may be red, golden red, red wheaten or wheaten.

Coat:

The Irish Terrier sports a broken coat with a straight, wiry outer coat. The dense red undercoat is softer.

The dignified Irish Setter is independent and courageous. This intelligent breed possesses a protective instinct.

History:

In County Cork, Ireland, the forerunners of the Irish Terrier may include the Black and Tan Terrier and another terrier. This bold and lively breed became renowned for hunting fox, otter and vermin. At the end of the 19th-century, this dog developed a solid red coat. This retriever worked as a messenger and sentinel during World War I.

Temperament:

The spirited and affectionate Irish Terrier can be kind to humans. This breed is reserved with strangers and combative with other dogs and small animals. This loyal dog is eager for mental and physical challenges.

Care:

Training:

Begin firm training when your terrier is young. Early socialization will help. The Irish Terrier is capable of learning complex tasks. He may be difficult to housebreak.

Activity:

Allow plenty of physical and mental activities in a safe area. When walking, keep your dog on a firmly controlled leash at all times to prevent him from fighting other dogs. The Irish Terrier enjoys digging, tracking, hunting, retrieving, chasing and exploring. This breed has worked for the police and military.

Ownership:

Owners need to provide a home that includes a safe area. Keep this breed on a leash except when in an enclosed space. The Irish Terrier can be a good friend and loyal guardian for active children. This breed is well-mannered indoors if participating in rigorous exercise. Be aware that this dog should not come in contact with non-canine pets.
