Overview

Character:

Japanese Bobtails are very sweet and affectionate. Active and playful, these cats enjoy human companionship and like to play games such as fetch.

Country of Origin:

Japan.

History:

It is believed that this breed has been around for at least 2000 years and ancient depictions of these cats have been found in Japanese temples. Highly treasured in Japan, Japanese Bobtails were first transported to the United States after the Second World War. This breed gained championship status in 1976.

Name:

This breed was named for the fact that it has a shortened or “bobbed” tail.

Temperament:

Japanese Bobtails require plenty of attention and like to hold conversations with their owners. These cats travel quite well and are good at adjusting to new places. Japanese Bobtails get along well with children, dogs, and other pets.

Care

Training:

Japanese Bobtails can easily be trained to walk on a leash, play fetch, and do tricks.

Activity:

Japanese Bobtails are very active and playful cats that require plenty of attention.

Ownership:

Due to their playful and people-oriented natures, Japanese Bobtails are best suited for homes where they will receive plenty of attention. These cats aren’t afraid of noise or chaos so they do well in busy households and in households with children. Ideally, a Japanese Bobtail should have a companion, whether feline or canine, to keep it company when the human family members aren’t around. The tails of Japanese Bobtails are quite sensitive and so should never be pulled or played with.
