Overview

Character:

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is intelligent, outgoing, and loving. They tend to be happy dogs and like with most retrievers, are gentle and affectionate toward children. Because of these traits, they have become very popular family pets.

Country of Origin:

Canada

History:

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever first appeared at the beginning of the 20th century in the Little River Region of Nova Scotia. They were utilized to toll waterfowl, especially ducks. The ancestry of this breed is not entirely clear, although some believe breeding with Cocker Spaniels, Golden Retrievers, and some kind of Setter was involved. In 1995, they were made the official dog of Nova Scotia.

Name:

Their name derives from the fact that they were utilized during the duck hunt in Nova Scotia.

Temperament:

They are very intelligent and alert and as such are always ready to act. They are not, however, hyperactive or overly anxious. Again, they make loving, affectionate pets and are very gentle with children. They love water.

Care

Training:

This breed is very intelligent and easily trained.

Activity:

These are very active dogs and as such require a lot of exercise. Ideally, they should have a large yard to run around in as they enjoy their independence. However, it is also recommended that they have daily walks as well as a good play session. They enjoy human interaction so some combination of independent exercise and exercise with their owner is recommended.

Ownership:

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers are sociable and easily trained. They are affectionate and loyal toward their owners and as such make great pets. Their average lifespan is 11-13 years, which is moderate for dogs, but should be considered if you’re thinking about getting one as a pet. In addition, because they have long hair, they should be brushed daily.
