History:

Bergamascos originated in the Italian Alps and the Bergamao region where they were used as sheepdogs. While the exact origins of this ancient breed’s ancestors have been somewhat debated, it’s thought that Bergamascos may have descended from the Briar or from dogs imported from Asia many centuries ago.

Additional names for this breed include Bergamasco Shepherd Dog, Bergermaschi, and Cane da pastore Bergamasco.

Temperament:

These gentle and patient dogs are excellent flock guards and companions. Due to a stubborn streak, Bergamascos require firm, early training.

Bergamascos are stubborn dogs and require firm training at an early age.

Bergamascos are very active dogs.

Ownership:

Due to their need for open space and lots of daily exercise, Bergamascos are not suitable for city life. These dogs are excellent workers and also make wonderful pets. Since Bergamascos are quite stubborn, they are best suited for experienced dog owners. This breed requires regular grooming to keep the cords of its coat separated and untangled.
