Overview

Character:

Catahoula Leopard Dogs are very intelligent and energetic dogs. When properly trained, they can make very loving and affectionate companions.

Country of Origin:

USA.

History:

This long-standing breed possibly descended from mastiffs and greyhounds brought to Louisiana during the sixteenth century. In 1979, the Catahoula Leopard Dog was declared the official dog of the state of Louisiana. This breed is recognized by the United Kennel Club, but is not yet fully recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Name:

The name Catahoula means “clear water” in a Native American language. Additional names for this breed include Catahoula Cur, Catahoula Hog Dog, and Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog.

Temperament:

Catahoula Leopard Dogs are protective and territorial by nature. Early obedience training is necessary to prevent aggression towards other dogs, adults, and children. When properly trained and socialised, these dogs can be very gentle, even with children.

Care

Training:

Catahoula Leopard Dogs are very intelligent but absolutely require early training and socialisation to prevent aggressive behaviour.

Activity:

Catahoula Leopard Dogs have a very high activity level and require plenty of exercise.

Ownership:

This breed is not suitable for everyone. When not properly trained or socialised, Catahoula Leopard Dogs can be dangerous around people due to aggressive behaviour such as biting. As a result of both a tendency toward aggression and their large size, these dogs should only be handled by those with significant experience. Catahoula Leopard Dogs are also better suited for country life than city life, as they are very high energy animals and need lots of space and exercise.
