Shorthaired Group.

Weight:

Females weigh approximately 6 to 8 pounds while males can weigh as much as 12 pounds.

Height:

Egyptian Maus grow to an average size.

Color(s):

Bronze, silver, and smoke are the three standard colorings for Egyptian Maus, but these cats can also be black or blue. These cats have spots of different shapes and sizes.

Coat:

Egyptian Maus have short and sleek coats.

Overview

Character:

Egyptian Maus are playful and intelligent cats. They make very loyal and loving companions. Egyptian Maus like to have company and often express their happiness by chortling in a musical voice and wiggling their tails.

Country of Origin:

Egypt/Italy.

History:

Egyptian Maus have been around since the time of ancient Egypt and have one of the longest histories of any cat breed in existence today. Egyptian Maus were worshipped as gods and images of these cats have been depicted on the tombs of Egyptian Pharohs. The modern Egyptian Mau, however, was developed in Italy in 1953 and first appeared in the United States during the late 1950s.

Name:

“Mau” is the Egyptian word for cat.

Temperament:

Although generally very extroverted and gregarious, Egyptian Maus can sometimes be shy around strangers. These cats love attention and are more than happy to be fussed over. While they may bond with one family member in particular, Egyptian Maus love the companionship of all familiar humans.

Care

Training:

Egyptian Maus are very intelligent and can be trained to walk on a leash and to do tricks.

Activity:

Egyptian Maus have a high activity level. They require plenty of playtime, stimulation, and interaction.

Ownership:

The ideal home for an Egyptian Mau is one where the cat will receive plenty of attention and human interaction. These cats are great with children and get along with other pets. Cuddly and smart, Egyptian Maus will fetch specific toys when asked and they love to learn to do tricks. These cats are also quite good at traveling and have low maintenance coats. Due to their exotic appearance, its best to keep Egyptian Maus on a leash when outdoors in order to prevent them from being stolen by theives.
