Weight:

Approximately 50-65 kg.

Height:

At least 72-77 cm.

Color(s):

Spanish Mastiffs can come in any colour. Preferred solid colours include fawn, red, black, yellow, piebald, and grey.

Coat:

The coat is relatively long and consists of smooth, thick fur.

Overview

Character:

These powerful yet noble dogs are kind and intelligent. Rustic and lively, Spanish Mastiffs are excellent guard dogs and affectionate pets.

Country of Origin:

Spain.

History:

This large breed originated in southwestern Spain and may have developed from the Mastiff and the Roman Molussus. Originally bred to protect sheep and other livestock from predators, Spanish Mastiffs were also used for hunting large game and in wars. These days, Spanish Mastiffs are predominately kept as guard dogs and as companions.

Name:

The Spanish Mastiff is also known as the Mastín Español, Mastín de España, Mastín de la Mancha, Mastín de Extremadura, and the Mastín de Leon.

Temperament:

Spanish Mastiffs are courageous and self-assured dogs that stand their ground against strangers, predators, and others threats. At the same time, this breed has a very calm temperament and is gentle with children. The Spanish Mastiff tends to form a strong bond with its owner.

Care

Training:

With their calm temperament and intelligence, Spanish Mastiffs are quite easy to train.

Activity:

These dogs are quite active and require plenty of space and exercise.

Ownership:

Spanish Mastiffs are excellent guard dogs and wonderful companion animals. Those who own these dogs love them for their kind nature and noble beauty. Potential owners should keep in mind that Spanish Mastiffs require significant exercise and regular brushing.
