FELINE HYPERTHYROIDISM
My 13 year-old cat Dolce seems like she is fine to me but was recently diagnosed with feline hyperthyroidism.

She is a pampered in-door housecat who only drinks reverse osmosis purified water and Organic Paul Newsman’s cat food (albeit mostly the hard food because I thought it was good for her teeth.)

CONSTIPATION
I started feeding her a lot of cooked chicken, which our holistic vet for our dog said is good for her but I know I probably overdid it (& their systems are sensitive and the food has to be balanced) because all of a sudden she got constipated. I took her to the vet for the constipation and they said she has hyperthyroidism T4 level is 5.6. This was about 3 weeks ago.

They gave her an enema. I switched to Paul Newman’s canned food and mix it with water, a wonderful organic pro-bi mixture (which also contains organic aloe vera, organic peppermint, organic dandelion extract, organic ginger extract). I have given her organic olive oil, organic coconut oil, laxatone to try different things. Pumpkin does not seem to do anything.

I took her to the vet for another enema a few days ago and fluids and she looked and acted great. She went to the bathroom on Day 1, Day 2, Day 3 and Day 4 is today and she did not go again.

PRESCRIPTION
The vet prescriped .5 mg of meth, which I have reluctantly given her twice a day for about a month now. My vet wants me to give her Miralax, which to me looks very unhealthy. I dread giving it to her. I want to get her off medication.

Questions:
Do you have any diet recommendations and I saw a constipation remedy on petwellbeing?

Dose of methimazole is 2.5 mg twice daily.

Do you think I can stop giving her methmazole abruptly and start giving her:
Thyroid Support Gold – Cat Hyperthyroidism Support

Tyler said I could have you explain the benefits of this product to my vet. Because you are a vet, you might have more credibility in their eyes.

Also, I am at my wit’s end on the constipation issue.

Can you recommend something for that? I want to switch her food eventually if I can find a high quality human grade or organic that is better than Paul Newman’s. Do you have any suggestions?

Also, Tyler said you had a recipe for homemade cat food for hyperthyroidism.

I would try the Smooth BM Gold but I would also wonder about this cat’s kidneys as many times older cats have underlying kidney issues and need extra fluids. I would use a canned food with this cat–homemade hyperthryoid diets for treatment of hyperthyroidism really don’t work. Miralax is not such a horrible thing–you could also try lactulose.
If you switch from the medication to TSG I would replace one dose of the medication with one dose of the herb and do this for 1 month and see how the cat is doing. It works well in some cats and not in others so you never know until you try it.
