Dear Dr. Jan:
Just wondering if you have a “natural” product suggestion for a one and a half year old, small mixed breed (probably Chihuahua/Pomeranian) dog with a luxating patella. He may need surgery, but we would like to offer him some nutritional and supplemental support.
Thank you,
Rosanne A
Hi Rosanne
I deal with these sort of patients all the time. there are a few things you can do..put him on a high quality diet, grain free or homemade..I like the Annamaet Brand but there are other good foods out there. Supplement him with Omega 3 fatty acids–Pet Wellbeing has a grizzly Salmon oil that would be fine. Agile Joints is a great supplement for these little guys as well. I would also recommend you seek out a rehabilitation veterinarian who can help you with exercise therapy so you can avoid surgery–it is definitely possible if you strengthen the muscles that surgery can be avoided.
Best to you,
Dr Jan
