Character:

Caucasian Ovcharkas are very adaptable and active dogs. While they tend to only obey dominant family members, they will get along well with children when properly socialised. When well-trained, these dogs can make good family companions.

Russia, Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan.

History:

This breed originated in the Caucasus mountain range and is likely directly descended from the Tibetan Mastiff. Caucasian Ovcharkas can be found in many parts of the former Soviet Union and are officially recognized by the FCI and the UKC.

Name:

This breed was named for its place of origin in the Caucasus mountain range located between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Caucasian Ovcharkas have several additional names such as Ovtcharka, Sage Ghafghazi, Volkodav, Kavkaski Ovcar, Caucasian Shepherd Dog, Caucasian Mountain Dog, Caucasian Sheepdog, Gampr (Armenia), Çoban iti (Azerbaijan), and Nagazi nagazi (Georgia).

Temperament:

Caucasian Ovcharkas are typically very even-tempered. However, they are wary of strangers and tend to bite unless they receive proper training at an early age.

Activity:

Caucasian Ovcharkas are active dogs with a high exercise requirement.

Ownership:

This breed is best suited for experienced dog owners who can provide the proper training and socialisation necessary to prevent aggressive behaviour. Caucasian Ovcharkas also require plenty of space and daily exercise. These adaptable dogs do well in a variety of climates and typically only require weekly grooming. For the right owners, Caucasian Ovcharkas can be great family companions.
